Old Sparta — Oldest surviving settlement in the county, and also was a trading center.

 Old Sparta, town in Edgecombe County on Tar River—Incorporated in 1876, and reincorporated as Old Sparta 1903.  Was a Post office as early as 1829—Discontinued in 1905:  The following names are some of the first Postmasters:

          John F. Hughes
                                     William I Moore
          Joab Pitt
                                                Jesse E. Brown
          James Carney

 Discontinued 14, May 1868, reestablished 11 May 1869
